North Korea -> Mt. Kumgang -> Kuryong Waterfall Tour Course
Kuryong Waterfall Tour Course
Mt. Kumgang,

The Kuryong Waterfall Tour Course is one of several tour courses of varying difficulty available to visitors to the Kumgang Mountain area. This course is about 12 mi./19 km. long (and up; although you can take a bus and start further along the route to shorten it by about half.) It will take the slowest walkers 4-5 hours, and the faster ones only 1-2 hours, to complete the roundtrip. The object is not to race along but to view the various scenic spots and vistas along the way up to the Kuryong Waterfall and the Sangpaldam Pools (Eight Upper Pools) at the top of the falls. The path itself follows a relatively narrow valley up into the mountains. The waterfall is one of the three tallest waterfalls in Korea, measuring 46 ft./74 m. high. One of the unique features of the waterfall and the pond below it is that they are made from one solid rock.

For information on how to visit the Kumgang Mountains from South Korea, please see the Kumgang "city page". Special tours, open to South Koreans and non-Koreans as well, have been arranged to Kumgang since November, 1998. Initial tours went by ship but now participants travel by motorcoach through the DMZ. The Kumgang area has been designated a special tourist area by North Korea such that participants do not need a normal visa (as opposed to being on a group entry/exit list).

Note that the official South Korean English-spelling of this tour course and the waterfall is Guryong Falls.
