Nampo (see photos above) is the marine gateway to Pyongyang and a major industrial city in North Korea. It is located about 27 mi./ 43 km. southwest of Pyongyang at the mouth of the Taedong River. Its primary interest to tourists today is the massive West Sea Barrage which closed off the mouth of the Taedong, a significant engineering feat, helping keep the salt and fresh water separate, providing fresh water for irrigation and drinking, assisting with flood control, and raising the level of the water in the river to facilitate inland shipping.
