King Tangun's Tomb
PYONGYANG, Pyongyang Municipality

The Tomb of King Tangun was opened in October, 1994 covering a total of 45 hectares. The tomb was reconstructed on the site believed to be the burial place of the mythical King Tangun and his wife after bones found early in the 1990s were identified as those of King Tangun. The wooden coffins on display inside the tomb are said to be contain the remains of the King and his wife.

King Tangun is credited with being the founder of the Korean nation, the slave-owning state called Kojoson, 5,000 years ago. Thus his tomb being in Pyongyang has important political implications as to the rightful seat of Korean government and leadership. There is a charge of about $12 to actually enter the tomb to see the coffins.

“Thanks to the correct policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea for preserving our nation’s cultural relics, Tangun, who was thought for thousands of years to have been a mythical being, was proved to have been a real person, and his tomb perfectly reconstructed in less than a year.”

“The tomb of King Tangun, founding father of Korean Nation, is one of the national treasures illustrating Korea’s long history and its homogeneous nationhood.”

“The reconstructed tomb of King Tangun is a precious historic and cultural treasure in the era of the Workers’ Party of Korea. It will be handed down for generations, together with the noble ideas about loving the country and people displayed by the fatherly leader Comrade Kim Il Sung and the great leader Comrade Kim Jung Il. They ensured our nation’s ancestral father and its 5,000-year history were discovered.”
